Independence Vocab

TermDefinition
Bicameral: a legislative body made up of two (bi) chambers (camera)
Republic: a state in which political power rests with the public (people), typically through their representatives
Ordinance: a local law of a city or town, duly enacted by the proper authorities, prescribing general, uniform and permanent rules of conduct relating to the corporate affairs of the municipality
Depreciate: diminish in value over a period of time
Depression When the economy has a down turn
Manumission: release from slavery.
Proportional: corresponding in size, degree, or intensity
Compromise: a settlement of a dispute by each party giving up some demands
Federalism: the division and sharing of power between the national and state governments.
Legislative Branch: made up of the House and Senate, known collectively as the Congress.
Executive Branch: consists of the President, his or her advisors and various departments and agencies
Electoral College: a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
Judicial Branch: includes the Supreme Court and other federal courts
Check and Balances: when each branch checks each other to make sure that they have the same equality
Amendment: a formal or official change made to a law, contract, constitution, or other legal document
