| Proportional | Corresponding in size or amount to something else; in government, it often refers to representation based on population size |
| Compromise | An agreement in which both sides give up something to reach a solution acceptable to both. |
| Federalism | A system of government where power is divided between a central (national) government and regional (state) governments. |
| Legislative Branch | The branch of government that makes laws. In the U.S., this is Congress |
| Executive Branch | The branch of government that enforces and carries out laws. It includes the President, Vice President, and federal agencies |
| Electoral College | The system used in the U.S. to elect the president, where electors from each state vote based on the popular vote in their state |
| Judicial Branch | The branch of government that interprets laws and ensures they are applied fairly. It includes the court system, especially the Supreme Court |
| Check and Balances | A system that ensures no single branch of government becomes too powerful. Each branch can limit the power of the others |
| Amendment | A formal change or addition made to a law, contract, or constitution |
