Republic A form of government where the people elect representatives to make decisions and laws on their behalf.

Manumission The act of a slave owner freeing their slaves.
Proportional Corresponding in size or amount to something else; in government, it often refers to representation based on population size
Compromise An agreement in which both sides give up something to reach a solution acceptable to both.
Federalism A system of government where power is divided between a central (national) government and regional (state) governments.
Legislative Branch The branch of government that makes laws. In the U.S., this is Congress
Executive Branch The branch of government that enforces and carries out laws. It includes the President, Vice President, and federal agencies
Electoral College The system used in the U.S. to elect the president, where electors from each state vote based on the popular vote in their state
Judicial Branch The branch of government that interprets laws and ensures they are applied fairly. It includes the court system, especially the Supreme Court
Check and Balances A system that ensures no single branch of government becomes too powerful. Each branch can limit the power of the others
Amendment A formal change or addition made to a law, contract, or constitution
