| Bicameral | (of a legislative body) having two branches or chambers. |
| Republic | a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. |
| Ordinance | a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority. |
| Depreciate | diminish in value over a period of time. |
| Depression | When the government is on an economic downfall |
| Manumission | release from slavery. |
| Proportional | two things are in a correct or appropriate relationship to each other in size, shape, or quantity |
| Compromise | an agreement reached where both parties give up something they want to resolve a dispute |
| Federalism | a system of government where power is divided and shared between a central national government and smaller, regional governments like states |
| Legislative Branch | the branch of government responsible for making laws |
| Executive Branch | the part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch |
| Electoral College | a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. |
| Judicial Branch | the branch of government responsible for interpreting the law by applying it to individual cases and deciding if laws are constitutional |
| Checks and Balances | counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups. |
