Bicameral Having, consisting of, or based on two legislative chambers
Republic A government in which the power belongs to a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by the leaders and representatives elected by those citizens to govern according to law
Ordinance An authoritative decree or direction A law set forth by a governmental authority
Depreciate To lower in honor or esteem To lower the price or estimated value of
Depression A long-lasting period of greatly reduced general economic activity marked especially by widespread unemployment and declines in trade and production and often by deflation
Manumission Release from slavery
Proportional Corresponding in size, degree, or intensity
Compromise A settlement of disagreements reached by debating
Federalism The distribution of power in an organization (such as a government) between a central authority and the constituent
Legislative Branch The branch of government responsible for making laws,
Executive Branch The branch of the government responsible for enforcing and carrying out the laws.
Judicial Branch The branch of the government responsible for interpreting laws and administering justice through the court system.
Checks and Balances A system that allows each branch of a government to amend, override, or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power or power beyond its authority
Amendment The process of altering or amending a law or document (such as a constitution) by parliamentary or constitutional procedure
Electoral College Body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president
