independence vocab

TermDefinition
bicameral having, consisting of, or based on two legislative chambers.
republic a government in which the power belongs to a group of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by the leaders and representatives elected by those citizens to govern according to law.
ordinance a law set forth by a governmental authority.
depreciate to lower the price or estimated value of something.
depression a lowering of physical or mental vitality or of functional activity.
manumission the elimination of slavery.
proportional regulated or determined in size or degree with reference to proportions.
compromise to come to agreement by mutual concession.
federalism the distribution of power in an organization.
legislative branch the legislative branch is the branch of government responsible for making laws.
executive branch the executive branch is responsible for enforcing and carrying out the laws.
electoral college it is a process which includes the selection of electors and meetings of electors who cast votes for the president and vice president.
judicial branch the judicial branch interprets and applies laws to individual cases, settling legal disputes and ensuring laws are applied fairly and in line with the constitution.
check and balances checks and balances are a system where governmental branches (legislative, executive, and judicial) share and limit each other's power to prevent any one from becoming too powerful.
amendment an alteration proposed or affected by this process.
