| Bicameral | Having two chambers or houses most commonly referring to a government's legislature. |
| Republic | A form of government where supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, or a nation with such a government |
| Ordinance | a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority. |
| Depreciate | the way government entities record the cost of an asset over its useful life, not its market value |
| Depression | a severe and prolonged downturn in economic activity |
| Manumission | release from slavery. |
| Proportional | two things are in a correct or equivalent relationship, often in mathematics where the ratio between two variables remains constant |
| Compromise | an agreement reached where both parties give up something they want to resolve a dispute |
| Federalism | a system of government where power is divided and shared between a central national government and smaller, regional governments like states |
| Legislative Branch | the branch of government responsible for making laws |
| Executive Branch | the part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch |
| Electoral College | (in the US) a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. |
| Judicial Branch | the branch of government responsible for interpreting the law by applying it to individual cases and deciding if laws are constitutional |
| Check and Balances | a system of limitations on power where each branch of government has the ability to amend, or void, the acts of another branch to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful |
| Amendment | a formal change made to a legal document, such as a contract, law, or the U.S. Constitution |
