| Republic: | a government in which the power belongs to a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by the leaders and representatives elected by those citizens to govern according to law |
| Ordinance: | an authoritative decree or direction |
| Depreciate: | to lower in honor or esteem |
| Depression: | an act of depressing or a state of being depressed |
| Manumission: | the act or process of manumitting |
| Proportional: | a number or quantity in a proportion |
| Compromise: | settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions |
| Federalism: | the distribution of power in an organization (such as a government) between a central authority and the constituent |
| Legislative Branch: | the part of the U.S. government, called Congress, that is responsible for making federal laws |
| Executive Branch: | the part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch |
| Electoral College: | a body of electors |
| Judicial Branch: | the branch of government responsible for interpreting the law by applying it to individual cases and deciding if laws are constitutional |
| Check and Balances: | counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups |
| Amendment: | the process of altering or amending a law or document (such as a constitution) by parliamentary or constitutional procedure |
