| Bicameral | Having two branches or chambers. |
| Republic | A form of government where supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and the head of state is not a monarch. |
| Ordinance | An authoritative order or a decree. |
| Depreciate | Diminish in value over a period of time. |
| Depression | A severe and prolonged downturn in economic activity. |
| Manumission | Release from slavery. |
| Proportional | Having a relative size or amount compared to another, or having a constant ratio between two or more things. |
| Compromise | An agreement reached where both parties give up something they want to resolve a dispute. |
| Federalism | A system of government where power is divided and shared between a central national government and smaller, regional governments like states. |
| Legislative Branch | The branch of government responsible for making laws. |
| Executive Branch | The part of government responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering the laws passed by the legislative branch. |
| Electoral College | A body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. |
| Judicial Branch | The branch of government responsible for interpreting the law by applying it to individual cases and deciding if laws are constitutional. |
| Check and Balances | Counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups. |
| Amendment | A formal change made to a legal document, such as a contract, law, or the U.S. Constitution. |
