| Bicameral | Having, consisting of, or based on two legislative chambers. |
| Republic | A government in which the power belongs to a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by the leaders and representatives elected by those citizens to govern according to law. |
| Ordinance | An authoritative decree or direction. |
| Depreciate | To lower in honor or esteem. |
| Depression | A long and severe recession in an economy or market. |
| Manumission | Release from slavery. |
| Proportional | Corresponding in size or amount to something else. |
| Compromise | An agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions. |
| Federalism | A principle or system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs. |
| Legislative Branch | The part of the government that creates laws. |
| Executive Branch | The part of the government that enforces and administrating the laws made by the legislative branch. Led by the president. |
| Electoral College | (in the US) a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president. |
| Judicial Branch | The branch of government responsible for interpreting laws, applying them to individual cases, and deciding if laws are constitutional. |
| Check and Balances | Counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups. |
| Amendment | A minor change or addition designed to improve a text, piece of legislation, articles added to the Constitution. |
| Federalism | A principle or system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs. |
