1776 Events by Month

January 1776 Philadelphia - Thomas Paine calls for the American colonies to separate from Great Britain with his popular pamphlet “Common Sense".
February 1776 Royal Governor Josiah Martin of North Carolina attempts to reestablish British authority in the colony, but rising Revolutionaries defeat Loyalists at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge
March 1776 American Indians hear of the possibility of American independence. Their way of life and their lands are at risk of being lost in the conflict between the rising Revolutionaries and Great Britain
April 1776 North Carolina - becomes the first colony to instruct its delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for independence
May 1776 Rhode Island - renounces its allegiance to Great Britain and the independence movement gains support in Massachusetts, New York, Virginia, and South Carolina
June 1776 Over 50 declarations supporting American independence are issued throughout the colonies
July 1776 The Continental Congress declares the United States of America to be free and independent and “absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown.”
