Progressive Movement

TermDefinition
Populist Party political party formed in 1892 representing mainly farmers, favoring gov't control of railroads and other monopolies
muckrakers A group of investigative reporters who pointed out the abuses of big business and the corruption of urban politics
Jacob Riis muckraker who exposed the poor conditions of tenements in NYC in his novel "How The Other Half Lives"
Upton Sinclair muckraker who wrote The Jungle. a book about the horrors of food production in 1906.
temperance abstinence from alcoholic drink
women's suffrage the right of women to vote
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire a factory fire that killed 146 workers trapped in the building; led to new safety standard laws
17th Amendment Established the direct election of senators (instead of being chosen by state legislatures)
minimum wage laws a minimum hourly rate for any kind of labor
Sherman Antitrust Act an 1890 law that banned the formation of trusts and monopolies in the United States
Pure Food and Drug Act Halted the sale of contaminated foods and medicines and called for truth in labeling
Theodore Roosevelt American politician, soldier, conservationist, and explorer who served as 26th President of the U.S.
