| investor | a person who gives money to help start or grow a business, hoping to get more money back later |
| island | land completely surrounded by water |
| manufacture | to make products, usually in large amounts |
| peninsula | land surrounded by water on three sides |
| physical boundaries | natural features like rivers, mountains, or oceans that create borders |
| raw materials | natural resources that can be used to make other products |
| settlement | a place where people establish a community |
| timber | wood used for building |
| trade | buying, selling, or exchanging goods |
| venture | a project or activity that might be risky but could bring rewards |
| Virginia Company of London | a group of English businessmen who received permission from King James I to start a colony in North America. These investors paid for the Jamestown Settlement. |
