Census: Definition? Census is the official count of a population.
Daniel Boone: Who is he/what did he do? Daniel Boone explored the warriors path through the Appalachian mountains.
Turnpikes: Define. Turnpikes are the roads on which tolls are collected.
National Road: Concept? Fate of it? The National Road was America's first big highway built from Ohio to Illinois. It later wore out when trains took over, and today parts of it exist as U.S. Route 40.
Problems with travel: What were they? Problems with travel could be backed up canals or traffic.
Robert Fulton & the Steamship: Who is he/what did he do? How did it change things? It changed things because the cost of shipping goods was reduced. Robert Fulton also developed a plan for the Erie Canal.
Canals: What were they? How do they change things? Canals are an Artificial Waterway. They changed things by freeing up pathways.
Locks: Explain. Locks are a separate compartment in which water levels rise and fall in order to raise or lower boats on a canal.
DeWitt Clinton & the Erie Canal: Describe the significance. The Erie Canal is 363 miles long (584km). It's also a really really long canal filled with openings and stops for the boats.
Why do cities develop along rivers? They develop along rivers so that boats can come through and it might be easier for traveling.
