Potosi Bolivia, silver mining starts in 1546. Natives were enslaved to work in the mines. Spaniard were the upper class, men were enslaved and died but women would find status
the starving times Jamestown, winter of 1609. Settlers were stealing food and killing Natives, Powhatan kept them barricaded in their fort. 240 people died
Richard Frethorne Arrived to Jamestown in 1623, tobacco plant. Died 3 months after arriving
John Sossamon Born near Boston around 1620, orphaned and raised by the English. Christian, fluent in english, works in a praying town. Leaves the English and works for Metacom, comes back to warn them of incoming war. Is murdered
Anthony Johnson Arrived to Virginia in 1621 (from Angola), survived a Powhatan attack on the plant and earned his freedom. Married and had children and 250 acres of land
Elizabeth Key Grinstead Born in Virginia in 1630, half white. Custody court then father dies. Given to Higgins and sold to Mottrams with 5 years on her contract. Kept as a slave past her contract and marries. Husband fights for her in court, given backpay
Roger Williams Arrived to Boston in 1631, new and dangerous ideas- separation of church and state/rights of Natives. Exiled in winter, lives, founds Rhode Island (pays Natives for their land)
Beaver Wars Mid 1600s, Huron vs Iroquois, fighting over beaver land. guns
William Scot Arrived in Maryland in 1660s, typical successful servant, lived and bought land
King Phillip's War Also Metacom’s war, 1675, devastates both sides. Metacom dies and his side falls apart. Praying towns are over, Sossamon warned of this war
Benign neglect when continuous attention is worse than being ignored. Americans thrived when they were left to their own devices
