| Colony | A territory settled and governed by people from another land. Example: Jamestown in VA, 1607 |
| Charter | A document issued by a sovereign granting rights. In exploration, it allowed settlement in new lands |
| Mercantilism | Economic theory that colonies exist to benefit the mother country by providing raw materials and markets |
| Settlement | A small community established in a new land. Example: Roanoke Colony attempt |
| Expedition | A journey for exploration or conquest. Example: Columbus’s first expedition in 1492. |
| Navigator | A person who plans and directs the course of a ship. |
| Indigneous | Native people living in a region before external groups arrived. |
| Trade Route | A path or network used by merchants to transport goods between places. |
| Conquistador | A Spanish conqueror or explorer, especially those who colonized parts of the Americas. |
