Early National Period and Constitution Vocabulary

TermDefinition
1. Articles of Confederation The first constitution of the U.S., emphasizing state sovereignty and a weak central government.
2. Federalism A system of government where power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units (states).
3. Constitutional Convention The 1787 meeting in Philadelphia where delegates drafted the U.S. Constitution.
4. Great Compromise Agreement that established a bicameral legislature with proportional representation in the House and equal representation in the Senate.
5. Bill of Rights The first ten amendments to the Constitution, guaranteeing individual freedoms and rights.
6. George Washington's Presidency Set many precedents including the cabinet system, neutrality in foreign affairs, and the two-term tradition.
7. Louisiana Purchase 1803 land acquisition by Thomas Jefferson that doubled the size of the U.S.
Suffrage The right to vote in political elections.
Indentured Servant A person who agreed to work for someone for a set number of years in exchange for a trip to a new place, like America, or to pay off a debt.
Ratification The official approval of a law, agreement, or document.
