What is socialism? belief in social ownership of the means of production, as opposed to private ownership
What socialist ideas and values does collectivism inform? - Equality, welfare and common ownership
What does collectivism imply? - Humans can achieve their potential better through collective action, rather than individual effort - Transformation of society is achieved through collective endeavour (the possibility of an ideal society)
Why do socialists endorse collectivism? - The interests of a group come before individual self interest, which encourages a sense of social responsibility - It uses the capabilities of society as a whole, avoiding the waste inherent in competitive individualism
