September 1919 A group of ultra-nationalist ex-soldiers, seized control of the city of Fiume, which was given to Yugoslavia post-war
Gabriel D'Annuzio An Irredentist who led the invasion of Fiume by ultra-nationalist ex-soldiers.
September 1920 Following the Italian Governments blockade of the city, D'Annuzio's men were forced to surrender.
Impact of the Fiume Incident Highlighted the widespread anger amongst the Italian population and the weakness of the Italian Government

Rural peasant workers . . . Attempted to seize land for themselves, this lead to fears that Italy might succumb to a soviet revolution
In 1921 The far-left of the PSI (Italian Socialist Party), split to form the (PCI) Italian Communist Party and won 15 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
To combat the perceived threat from Socialists and Communists . . . Right-wing nationalist groups were formed
These groups opposed . . . the government and the King Victor Emmanuel the third, blaming them for Italy's economy and its failure to secure better terms in the post war treaties.
What political party was Mussolini previously a member of? The Socialist Party, before he was expelled in 1914 for his pro-war stance
Did Mussolini support the invasion of Fiume? Yes fully, and post-war he became involved in right wing groups
In 1919 Mussolini . . . United several of these right wing groups to form the Italian League of Combatants
