What was the first English settlement? Jamestown.
What's a charter? An official document that gives certain rights to an individual or group.
Who's John Smith? A leader who led the people of Jamestown.
What's Powhatan? American Indians in the tidewater region of Virginia that were frequent visitors to Jamestown bringing foods and furs to trade.
How did Pocahontas play a significant role in American history? She served as a vital link between the Native Americans and the Englishmen.
Who's John Rolfe? An Englishmen who started the tobacco industry in Virginia.
What's a planter? Wealthy farmers with large plantations.
Who were indentured servants? Colonists who signed to work 4-7 years for those who paid for their ship fare to America.
What's the Head right system? Entitles a planter to fifty acres of land for each servant brought into the colony.
Who created the Plymouth colony? The pilgrims.
What's a sect? A religious group of denomination.
What's a separatist? A group of English protestants preferring to separate from rather than reform the church of England.
Who were the Pilgrims? Pilgrims were the English separatists who founded Plymouth Colony in New England in 1620.
What's the Mayflower Compact? Bound the group together for the purpose of passing "just and equal laws...... for the general good of the colony"
Who's William Bradford? Took responsibility for arranging the details of the Pilgrims emigration to America. He served as Plymouth's governor for 30 years.
Who's Squanto? A pawtuxet Indian who spoke English, he acted as a guide and interpreter. With his help colonists learned to plant corn, catch fish, and gather fruit.
Who founded the Massachusetts Bay colony? The Puritans.
What's dissent? To think or feel differently, disagree, to withhold approval. (You can't have democracy without dissent)
What's a Puritan? Someone who wanted to reform or purify the Church of England.
What's covenant? A sacred agreement.
Who founded Providence, Rhode Island? Roger Williams.
Why was Providence, Rhode Island founded? Supported religious tolerance and the separation of the church and state.
Who founded Portsmouth, Rhode Island? Anne Hutchison.
Why was Portsmouth, Rhode Island founded? Anne was exiled from Boston for questioning some Puritan teachings.
Who founded Hartford, Connecticut? Thomas Hooker.
Why was Hartford, Connecticut founded? Voting rights are separate and independent of Church membership.
What were the Fundamental orders of Connecticut? Set up a government that did not require church membership to vote.
Who was the Wampanogs leader during King Philips War? Metacom also known as King Philip to the English.
Why was King Philips War started? In an attempt to preserve the Natives traditional way of life.
