ADHD attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: Neurodevelopmental disorder common in children; symptoms can include decreased focus, hyperactivity, and impulsivity
AC Before meals: Medication should be taken prior to a meal; e.g., Take 1 tablet PO AC
ADA American Diabetes Association: Develop guidance for management of diabetes
ADD attention deficit disorder: Term for a type of ADHD with predominantly inattentive presentation
ADH Antidiuretic Hormone: Also known as vasopressin; controls the amount of water reabsorbed by the kidneys
CGM Continuous Glucose Monitoring: Wearable device that tracks blood glucose in real time
GAD generalized anxiety disorder: Excessive worrying that interferes with daily life
IV Intravenous: Administered into a vein
MVI Multivitamin Product containing vitamins for human consumption
PCP Primary care physician: Provides general healthcare for a variety of acute and chronic health conditions
QS Sufficient amount: Adding an ingredient until you reach the desired volume; e.g., QS to 100 mL with saline
ROM Range of motion: Movement potential of a joint
SAD seasonal affective disorder: a type of depression that occurs approximately at the same time every year
SWFI Sterile water for injection: Water free of contamination
TNF Tumor necrosis factor: Involved in the inflammatory process
MCV Mean corpuscular volume: Average size of red blood cells
OCD obsessive compulsive disorder: repetitive behaviors due to unreasonable thoughts and fears
ADL activities of daily living: Used to assess patient's functional status; e.g., bathing, walking, using the toilet
ASA Aspirin: NSAID used to reduce inflammation
BMR Basal Metabolic Rate: Number of calories required to keep body functioning at rest
BUN Blood Urea Nitrogen: Screening test for the evaluation of kidney function
CrCl Creatinine Clearance: Estimate of Kidney Function
CVA cerebrovascular accident: Stroke
DKA Diabetic Ketoacidosis: Ketone buildup in the blood and urine occurring in cases of uncontrolled diabetes
DMARD Disease Modifying Antirhuematic Drug: Slows or stops the inflammatory process that can damage the joints
DPN Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: Peripheral nerve damage as a complication of diabetes
DTs delirium tremens: Severe form of acute alcohol withdrawal
eAG Estimated Average Glucose: Average blood sugar level based on the A1C
ECG electrocardiogram: checks electrical activity of the heart
EEG electroencephalogram: measure of electrical activity of the brain to help diagnose epilepsy and other neurological disorders
EPS extrapyramidal symptoms: Significant side effects of antipsychotic therapy such as dystonia, Parkinsonism, or tardive dyskinesia
FBG Fasting Blood Glucose: Glucose test in fasting state
Fx Fracture: Broken bone
HbA1C Glycosylated Hemoglobin A1c: Average blood glucose for 3 months
IVDA Intravenous drug abuser: Person who injects drugs for non-medical purposes
mL Milliliter: e.g., sterile water 15 mL
NE Norepinephrine: Precursor to epinephrine and potent vasopressor
NRT Nicotine replacement therapy: e.g., nicotine gum, lozenge, etc. used for smoking cessation
NSAID Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug: Medications commonly used for pain and inflammation; e.g., ibuprofen
OGTT Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: Test for diabetes, often used in pregnancy
PC After meals: Medication should be taken after a meal
PCA Patient controlled analgesia: Method of pain control that gives patients power to control their pain
PO By mouth: Medication to be taken orally; e.g., 1 tablet PO daily
PPD Packs per day: Measure of how many cigarette packs a person smokes each day (20 cigarettes/pack)
PR Per rectum: Inserted into the rectum
PRN As needed: Medication administered when necessary; e.g., 1 tablet PRN for pain
PTSD post-traumatic stress disorder: Mental health problem that can occur after a traumatic event like war, assault, or disaster
Q4h, q8h Every ___ hours: e.g., Take 1 tablet by mouth Q8h
REMS Risk evaluation and mitigation strategy: A special set of requirements mandated by the FDA for potentially dangerous drugs
S Without: e.g., Take medication S food
SCr Serum Creatinine: Laboratory value used to calculate creatinine clearance
SMBG Self-monitoring blood glucose: Patient checks their own blood glucose level using a glucometer
SOB Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing
STAT Immediately, at once: e.g., Aspirin 325 mg STAT
Sz seizure: Abnormal electrical activity in the brain
Tbsp Tablespoonful: 15 mL
TIA transient ischemic attack: mini-stroke
TID Three times daily: e.g., 2 tablets TID
TSH Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: Stimulates thyroid gland to produce thyroxine; T4; indicator of hypo or hyperthyroidism
UACR Urine Albumin to Creatinine Ratio: Indicator of chronic kidney disease
Ung Ointment: Oily, topical preparation
w/o without: e.g., Take w/o food
