Missouri Compromise of 1850 Henry Clay wanted to keep the number of free states and equal states equal so he proposed to have Missouri enter as a slave state and Maine to enter as a free state.
Popular Sovereignty Voters in a new territory could decide for themselves if they wanted to allow slavery.
Republican Party The main goal of this party was to keep slavery out of the west territory.
Fugitive Slave Act An Act that stated that all fugitive slaves would have to be reported to authorities by all others in free states.
Civil War War between people of the same country.
