How was Rapa Nui called Easter Island? Jacob Roggoveen arrived on Rapa Nui on Easter Sunday in 1772 and decided to call it Easter Island?
Who is Jacob Roggoveen? A Dutch navigator
Who first inhabited Rapa Nui? Oral legend is that Hotu Matu'a led his people to the island which made him the first Ariki
How was the Rapa Nui's society structured? Divided into clans on different parts of the island.
Steering by deep sea swells During the day navigators steer the vaka by feeling the lift and noting the direction of regular ocean swells
Land-roosting birds Navigators look for land nesting birds and the direction would tell them the way to land and the breed will tell them the flying distances
Watching the weather Navigators watch the weather to determine when the voyage should start.
Steering by stars and sun Day: Use the direction of the sun Night: Rise and set of stars and constellations
Swells and islands Swells wrap around islands and a change in the direction of swells could tell the navigator there was land.
Cloud patterns above islands Clouds have different patterns over islands as land heats more quickly than the sea and evaporation creates clouds of moisture
Island colours reflected on clouds Colours may reflect from land. White=coral, dark=heavy vegetation, green=shallow lagoons
Island 'blocks' Land mass created sea blocks which, once the navigator was inside, was able to interpret the sea patterns and head towards the central land mass
Changing sea colour near islands Water changes colour according to the depth of the ocean
Smoke, smell and taste Smoke from lightning of volcanic eruptions, smell of vegetation and the taste of water near land could be different
Drifting objects There may be floating vegetation from nearby islands
What do the Maoi head show us about Rapa Nui? It shows us that they are honouring past ariki and are a protection belief as they have their backs to the sea.
What is a theory as to how the Rapa Nui people moved the Maoi. Pulling them with a rope was a theory invented in 1955 by Thor Heyerdahl. (Other options are fine too)
When was it believed that people settled in New Zealand? Anytime between 800 and 1130CE
What does Maori mean? Original people
What did the Maori name their land and what did it mean? Aotearoa, meaning land of the long white cloud
What does iwi mean? Tribe
What are similarities between the Maori and Rapa Nui ariki? Chosen by birth, Highly respected and privileged
What are features of the Maori ariki? Carried a ceremonial club (patu), females can be ariki and they have to display exceptional qualities.
What are features of the Rapa Nui ariki? They have primarily political power
WHat's an example of how the Polynesians navigated across the ocean? They were able to find their way across vast reaches of the Pacific ocean basin navigating by the sun, stars, and other natural cues.
Why are the Moai's important to Rapa Nui people? Represented former tribal chiefs who had lots of power.
What type of clothes did the Maori people wear? native plants, and bird and animal skins. T
