| government | a group of people who are elected to make laws and govern (run) a community, state, or country |
| democracy | a type of government that is run by the people |
| legislative branch | makes our laws (also known as Congress) |
| bicameral | Congress is bicameral because it has 2 parts (Senate and House of Representatives) |
| executive branch | enforces our laws |
| judicial branch | interprets the laws to make sure they are fair |
| census | an official count of the population |
| Supreme Court | the head of the judicial branch of our government |
| bill | a proposed law |
| veto | to reject |
| Constitution | the supreme law of the land |
| amendments | official changes to the Constitution |
| rights | something that cannot be taken away |
