| growing season | the number of days in a year when the weather is warm enough for crops to grow |
| tourists | people on vacation |
| river basin | the land that is drained by a river and the river's tributaries |
| source | the starting point of a river |
| wetland | a wet area such as a swamp or marsh |
| agriculture | the business of growing crops and raising animals |
| fertile | an area that is good for growing crops |
| industry | all the businesses that make one kind of goods or provide one kind of service |
| coal | a black or brown mineral found in the ground |
| cash crop | a crop that is grown to be sold for money |
| mouth | the place where a river empties into the ocean or another large body of water |
| tributary | a smaller river that feeds into a larger river |
| dam | a wall built across a river |
| hydroelectric power | created when water rushes through openings in a dam and spins machines called turbines |
| technology | the use of skills, ideas, and tools to meet people's needs |
| labor union | a group of workers who push for better conditions |
| port | a place where ships load and unload their goods |
| delta | the land formed by the soil of the river deposits as it flows into the sea |
