Egypt Vocabulary Review

TermDefinition
Nile River Longest river in the world. "Gift" of freshwater for the Egyptians. Flows north.
Occupation Job or profession. In Ancient Egypt, social classes were organized by occupation.
Hieroglyphics Egyptian writing system made up of a combination of pictures and symbols.
Afterlife According to some religions there is life after death.
The Great Pyramid of Giza Largest pyramid in Egypt. Built as a tomb for pharaoh Khufu. Located in the city of Giza.
pharaoh A ruler of Ancient Egypt.
Ramses the Great Ruled for 66 years. Increased their territory through military conquests. Signed the first recorded peace treaty.
cultural diffusion The spread of ideas and ways of life from one culture to another
Nile Delta Fan shaped area of fertile marshland located where the Nile River enters the Mediterranean Sea.
papyrus Reed plant that grows wild along the Nile River used to make paper.
Mummification Egyptian way of wrapping a body to preserve it for the afterlife.
Embalming The process of treating a body to stop it from decaying. Removing the fluids.
The Sphinx of Giza Monument built in Giza to honor a pharaoh with the head of a pharaoh and body of a lion.
Queen Hatshepsut Female pharaoh of Egypt. Promoted economic growth through trade. Encouraged the arts.
Tutankhamen's Tomb Tomb of King Tut found mostly intact with artifacts that taught historians about the Ancient Egyptian culture.
Nubia Kingdom located south of Egypt. Traded with Egypt, fought over resources, adopted many beliefs and customs from Egypt.
