American Rev. pt. 1

Covering vocab for the causes of the Revolution

TermDefinition
Colony An area of land controlled by another country. They do this to make themselves rich
Cash Crops Crops grown specifically to make people lots of money
King George King of England during the Revolution. Was a tyrant. Super unfair to the colonies.
British Parliament A group of people that governed England. Made most of the big decisions when it came to running the government. Americans had no representation here. So they could never have real power.
French and Indian War War between France and England over land in America. This war cost money and left England broke as a joke.
Debt When you owe money. Makes you poor.
Tax Added costs to things you buy, so the government can make more money off of you. America's taxes were going towards paying England's debts.
Stamp Act A tax England put on all paper goods. Needed stamps in order to buy or sell or send any paper. Even playing cards.
Repeal Means to remove something that was put in place. Colonists wanted acts from Britain to be repealed.
Townshend Acts England put taxes on lead, paint, glass, paper, and tea.
Boston Massacre Violent event where British troops hurt American citizens
Intolerable Something you can't deal with or take. American's felt the British acts were intolerable.
Boston Tea Party Americans dressed as native americans dumped tea in the ocean to protest against the taxes from the British.
Lexington and Concord The first shots of the Revolution were shot here! They were the shots heard around the world because everybody was tuned in to see who would win.
"No taxation without representation" The idea that colonists repeated to the British. It means that you can't tax us and take our money unless we have a say in the government. Americans wanted representation in Parliament so they could influence what goes on in America.
