| desert | a place where very little rain falls |
| landforms | the shapes that make up the Earth's surface |
| plateau | a high, flat area that rises steeply above the surrounding land |
| Mississippi River | one of the longest rivers in North America |
| basin | a low, bowl-shaped landform surrounded by higher land |
| fuels | used to make heat or energy. Examples of them are oil, natural gas, and coal |
| natural resources | something in the environment that people can use |
| coastal plain | a narrow, flat strip along the Atlantic Ocean |
| interior plains | wide plains that stretch for hundreds of miles between two of our great mountain ranges |
| climate | the pattern of weather over many years |
| plain | a large area of nearly flat land |
| precipitation | the moisture that falls to the ground |
| renewable resources | resources that we can replace |
| nonrenewable resources | resources that have a limited supply |
| recycle | to use something again |
| minerals | a natural substance found in the earth |
| temperature | a measure of how hot or cold the air is |
| iron | one example of a mineral |
