Revolutionary War

TermDefinition
Taxation When the government makes people pay money (taxes) to help pay for things like war or services. Colonists were upset about British taxes.
Revolution A big change in government or power, often through fighting. The American Revolution was when the colonies fought to break away from British rule.
Independence Freedom from being ruled by someone else. The colonies wanted independence from Britain so they could make their own laws.
Protest When people speak out or act against something they think is unfair. Colonists protested British laws and taxes
Boycott Refusing to buy or use something to make a point. Colonists boycotted British goods to show they were unhappy with British taxes.
Patriot A colonist who wanted independence from Britain and supported the American Revolution.
Loyalist A colonist who stayed loyal to Britain and did not want independence.
Declaration of Independence A document written in 1776 that said the colonies were free from British rule. It explained why they wanted independence.
Sons of Liberty A group of colonists who protested British laws and helped lead the fight for independence.
Battle A fight between armies during a war. Many battles were fought during the American Revolution.
