Geographic Skills - Weeks 1-3

TermDefinition
Absolute Location Exact location; often given with coordinates
Compass Rose Symbol that shows cardinal directions
Equator Imaginary horizontal line around the middle of the Earth
Hemisphere A division of the Earth into north/south or east/west halves
Latitude Horizontal lines showing how far north or south places are from the equator.
Longitude Vertical lines going around the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole.
Political Map A map showing borders of regions, countries, states, and cities.
Population Map Shows the overall distribution of people in a region.
Scale Shows distance on a map.
Prime Meridian Primary lines of longitude dividing the world into halves.
cartographer A person who makes maps.
GPS Tool uses satellites to find a very specific location.
Example of a physical feature Mountain range, oceans, rivers, oceans, forests, etc
Climate Map Shows whether a place is usually warm, cold, wet, or dry
Greewich Mean Time (GMT) Starting point for time zones
Historical Map Mapy shows events and ideas in the past.
Where is the International Date line located? Halfway around the world from the Prime Meridian.
Legend or Key Explains what the symbols and colors mean.
How is a globe different from a map? Globe is a 3D model of the Earth
Relative Location My house is next to the arena.
Driest desert in North America Sonoran
Bodies of water located near Florida. Gulf of America and Atlantic Ocean
Are there mountains in Florida? No
What type of map is used to determine where people live? Population Map
Climate Map A map that shows the usual weather patterns of a place over a long period of time.
Physical Map A map that shows the natural features of Earth, such as mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, and deserts.
Political Map A map that shows boundaries and locations of countries, states, cities, and capitals.
Population Map A map that shows where people live and how many people live in different areas.
