Terms you should know before starting 8th grade Social Studies.

| colonization | the process of settling amongst and taking control over the people and land in an area |
| culture | beliefs, values, and behaviors shared by a group of people |
| economic | relating to the process or system of money, trade, or the economy |
| genocide | mass destruction of a national, racial, ethnic, or religious group |
| indigenous | native to |
| migration | moving from one country or place to live in another |
| militia | civilian army; a group of people who are not professional soldiers but are organized to act as an army |
| political | relating to gaining, seeking, and/or organizing power; includes events related to the government, such as making, enforcing, and interpreting laws |
| region | a part of a country, of the world, etc., that has common features but is different or separate from other parts in some way |
| slavery | a system of forced labor for the benefit of the enslaver that deprived enslaved people of their rights |
| social | of or relating to people, social classes, or society in general |
| primary source | original documents and objects that were created at the time or place of the event being studied |
| secondary source | sources that retell, analyze, or interpret events, usually created at a different time or place from the original event |
