Describe the geographic features of the New England Colonies. Rocky, infertile soil, cold climate, harsh winters, short growing season, deep water ports
Describe the geographic features of the Southern Colonies. Fertile soil, warm climate, long growing season.
Describe the geographic features of the Middle Colonies Warmer than New England, not as warm as Southern, fertile soil, long growing season deep water ports and rivers.
Why was education important to people living in the New England colonies? Reading the Bible for oneself was an important part of their religion and made literacy essential.
Why were town schools not common in the Southern colonies? The Southern colonies were created to make a profit and people were spread out on plantations which made it difficult to have town schools and there was not a religious focus on education like there was in the New England colonies.
How were children in the Southern colonies educated? Wealthy families hired tutors who lived with the families and taught the children. Poor children did not get an education unless their parents were literate and could teach them.
Why did planters switch from using indentured servants for labor to slaves? Enslaved labor cost less and increased production efficiency.
What questions should you ask about information from the internet? What is the source? Is there bias and what is it? Who is the author? Can you find the same information across multiple sources?
What is the difference between indentured servants and slaves? Indentured servants voluntarily work in exchange for passage to America and are free once they have paid back their debt. Slaves are forced to migrate to America and are considered property.
In which region were cash crops like rice and tobacco grown? Southern colonies
In what way was the housing of all three major SC tribes of Native Americans the same? They all used natural resources obtained from their environment.
What was the Native American concept of land ownership? Land was not owned by a single person, but was for the use of the whole tribe.
How was the government of the Cherokee, Catawba and Yemassee structured? They used councils of elders and chiefs to make decisions.
What allowed Native Americans in SC to live in permanent settlements and develop complex societies? The development of agriculture.
Why was the creation of the Virginia House of Burgesses an important event in history? It was the first time that the colonists were allowed to elect people to represent them and make laws.
How did the Puritan religion shape life in the New England colonies? They had a theocracy where the Puritan religion influences laws and education.
How was religion different in the Southern colonies as compared to the New England colonies? The Southern colonies were mostly Anglican and they were less strict about religion in their daily lives. New England was strictly Puritan and created a theocracy.
Why were cash crops grown? Cash crops were grown to trade or sell for profit.
Why were subsistence crops grown? Subsistence crops were grown on small farms and were intended to feel the family that grew them.
How do historians use the skill of chronology? To identify cause and effect
In which colonies was grain grown, giving the region the nickname "the bread basket colonies"? Middle Colonies
Which colonies were chiefly settled to make a profit? Southern Colonies
Which colonies were settled mainly for the freedom to practice a specific religion? New England Colonies
What is an artifact? A man-made object left behind that can be used to learn about people or events from that time period.
How did geography affect the Native Americans that lived in SC? It shaped their food sources, housing and government structures.
How were the Middle Colonies similar to both the New England and Southern Colonies? They had a mild climate and fertile soil and provided opportunities for both farming and trade.
How was the Virginia House of Burgesses different from the town meetings held in the New England colonies? The House of Burgesses was made up of representatives elected by the people while the town meetings were for all citizens and allowed the colonists to vote on issues themselves.
Why were the Middle Colonies so diverse? The Quakers believed that all people were equal and welcomed people of all religions such as Catholics and Jews, into the colony.
Define Mother Country A country that supports and controls a colony.
Who provided the labor on the subsistence farms in the New England Colonies? Subsistence farms are small, family owned farms and the labor is provided by the family that owns the farm.
Who provided the labor on the plantations in the Southern Colonies where cash crops were grown? Plantations are very large and required a lot of labor. This labor was usually in the form of indentured servants or slaves.
Theocracy A government where laws are made that reflect the areas religious practices.
