| US Constitution | A document creating an American government based on limited power, federalism, separated powers, checks and balances and popular sovereignty |
| Executive Branch | Charged with carrying out federal laws in Article II of The US Constitution, headed by the president, includes all federal departments |
| Grievances | Colonists complaints against King George III and Parliament |
| Declaration of Independence | 1776 document from the Second Continental Congress, stated that the 13 British former colonies were free states, established by the 5 ideals of the US can be seen as a break-up letter with Great Britain |
| Natural Rights | A power or privilege that is common to all people, granted at birth by nature (or God), not by society or a government |
| Legislative Branch | Charged with creating federal laws in Article I of The US constitution, consists of The US Congress, which is both The Senate and The House of Representatives |
| Judicial Branch | Charged with interpreting federal laws in Article III of the US Constitution, consisting of the Supreme Court and all Federal Courts |
| Federalist Papers | Argued for a national taxation and strong national defense, praised the Constitution for separation of Powers |
| Tyranny | Unjust Rule |
| Right to Assemble | Freedom of people to come together and collectively express, promote, pursue, and defend their collective or shared ideas |
| Ratify | To officially add or approve a Constitution or amendment |
| US Bill of Rights | Document listing the specific liberties and rights guaranteed to Americans, limits the power of the federal (and states) government |
| Articles of Confederation | 1781-1789 framework of government for the 13 former British colonies, very limited power, no executive branch, no federal court system, no power of taxation for the central government |
| Federalism | The division of power between the national government and state government |
| Republic | A form of government in which citizens hold supreme power, are entitled to vote for representatives, who govern according to the law. |
