| scale | a graphic that compares the distance on a map to the actual distance it represents |
| cardinal directions | North, South, East, West |
| cartographer | a person who makes maps |
| continent | one of the 7 large landmasses on the Earth |
| Eastern hemisphere | the hemisphere east of the Prime Meridian |
| Equator | an imaginary circle around the middle of the Earth that separates the Northern and Southern hemispheres |
| Intermediate directions | Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest |
| Latitude | distance north and south of the Equator, measured in degrees (hint: "flatitude") |
| Key | a list that identifies symbols used on a map |
| Longitude | distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees (hint: "loooooongitude") |
| Northern hemisphere | the half of the Earth that lies north of the Equator |
| Physical features | geographic features you can see (river, lakes, mountains, desert, etc) |
| Political map | a map with boundaries set by political authority and usually having a separate political organization |
| Prime meridian | an imaginary line that is located at 0 degrees and separates the Eastern and Western hemispheres |
| Road map | a map that shows streets |
| Southern hemisphere | the half of the Earth that is south of the equator |
| Map title | tells the subject of the map |
