chronology The study of time
BC Before Christ; countdown to the birth of christ. This is also called BCE (Before Common Era)
AD Anno domini; Latin which means the year of our Lord. There is no year 0, it goes from 1 BC to 1 AD. This is also called CE (Common Era)
Decade 10 years
Century 100 years
Millenium 1000 years
Scale A measurement on a map showing how distances are related to their actual distance (1 inch equals 10 miles)
Legend A description of symbols on a map; also called a key
Compass rose Shows the 4 cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) and sometimes intermediate directions (Northeast, Southwest, etc.)
Cartographer A person who creates maps
Physical map Shows natural features, like rivers and mountains
Political map Shows human made borders, like states and countries
Historical map Shows past events or places
Climate map Shows the expected weather over time
Primary sources First hand accounts from when an event occurred (diary, photo, video, artifacts)
Secondary sources Second hand accounts summarizing primary sources (an article describing what was seen in a video, books written after an even by someone not present)
Historical context Background information that helps us understand an event better (for examples, what was society like at the time of the event)
Corroboration Historians compare difference pieces of evidence to make sure they tell the same story
Perspective The point of view that each person brings to an event (you should not only look at one perspective because it may be biased)
