abduction A form of logical inference, first proposed by Charles Sanders Pierce, by which one seeks the most likely explanatory hypothesis or cause for a phenomenon
archetype A recurring character type or plot pattern found in literature, mythology, and popular culture.
associate, association One of the relationships, along with difference, that establish the significance of a sign within a sign system or code.
canon Books or works that are considered essential to a literacy tradition, as the plays of Shakespeare are of the canon of English literature.
class A group of related objects or people. Those who share the same economic status in a society are said to be of the same social class: working class, , middle class, upper class.
code A system of signs or values that assigns meanings to the elements that belong to it.
commodification The transforming of an abstraction or behavior into a product for sale.
connotation The meaning suggested by a word, as opposed to its objective reference, or denotation
consumption The use of products and services, as opposed to their production. A consumer culture is one that consumes more than it produces
context The environment in which a sign can be interpreted. In the context of a college classroom, for example, T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers are interpreted as ordinary casual dress.
cultural studies The academic study of ordinary, everyday culture rather than high culture.
culture The overall system of values and traditions shared by a group of people.
culture industry The commercial forces behind the production of mass culture or entertainment
denotation The particular object or class of objects to which a word refers.
difference, differentiate One of the relationships, a long with association, that establishes the significance of a sign within a sign system or code.
discourse The words, concepts, and presuppositions that constitute the knowledge and understanding of a particular community, often academic or professional
dominant culture The group within a multicultural society whose traditions, values, and beliefs are held to be normative, as the European tradition is the dominant culture in the United States
