Geography Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| latitude | imaginary lines that run east to west; parallel to the equator |
| longitude | imaginary lines that run north to south from the North Pole to the South Pole; parallel to the Prime Meridian |
| Cardinal (directions) | North, South, East, West |
| Intermediate (directions) | Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest |
| Physical (map) | a map that shows land and water features |
| Scale (map) | the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground |
| equator | An imaginary circle around the middle of the earth, halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole |
| thematic (map) | A type of map that displays one or more variables-such as population, or income level-within a specific area. |
| Legend (map) | The key to the map that tells you what the symbols and colors are |
| Political (map) | a map that shows the names and borders of countries |
| hemispheres | Halves of the globe divided by the equator and prime meridian |
