2.1 The New England Colonies

| charter colony | A colony governed by a trade company that received authorization from the king |
| proprietary colony | Colony in which the king gave control to one or more of the proprietors |
| royal colony | A colony controlled directly by the king who appointed a governor |
| Puritans | Group who wanted to purify the Anglican church from within. |
| Separatists | Group that believed that Christians needed to separate from the Anglican church |
| Mayflower Compact | An agreement that bound the Pilgrim settlers to submit to the colony's laws and leadership; the first document of self-government in America |
| William Bradford | Governor of Plymouth in 1621, and later wrote the history of the colony |
| Squanto | Helped the settlers learn about crop fertilization |
| John Winthrop | Governor of the Puritan colony |
| Roger Williams | Seen as a troublemaker, denounced Puritans for not severing all ties with the Anglican church. He preached a "pure church". This angered the Puritans and they ordered his arrest. He fled and later contributed to the formation of Rhode Island. |
| Anne Hutchinson | Was ordered to be banished from the colony due to her speaking out against some of the preaching of the Puritans. She also believed she had been given revelation from God that was more important than the bible. |
| Thomas Hooker | A Puritan minister who disagreed with the practice of limiting voting rights to male church members with property. |
| Fundamental Orders of Connecticut | The first written constitution in America |
