Sir Walter Raleigh He never actually came to North America but sponsored an expedition of colonists that settled on Roanoke Island.
mercantilism An economic system that said a nation's wealth consisted of precious metals, especially gold, and that a country should increase its wealth by increase its gold surplus
joint-stock companies Companies that raised large amounts of money to fund colonies by selling stock to investors in return for a share of any profits
John Smith He worked to enforce the kind of discipline necessary for the survival of Jamestown. Believed in "if you don't work you don't eat". He improved relations with the Powhatan's tribe
