| compass | An instrument that enabled sailors to know which direction they were heading |
| astrolabe | Instrument which enabled sailors to determine a ship's latitude on the ocean |
| caravel | A small, light ship with two or three triangular sails |
| Leif Ericson | A Norse (Norwegian) explorer who may have been the 1st known European to come to America |
| Christopher Columbus | Italian born explore who believed the world was round, but was not correct about the size. Thought could sale west for 3,000 miles and would reach Japan. |
| Amerigo Vespucci | Made exploratory trips to the Caribbean and South America between 1499 and 1502. America was named after this person |
| Hernando Cortés | In 1519 he reached Mexico and became the 1st conquistador (conqueror) |
| Juan Ponce de León | Claimed area he explored for Spain |
| Francisco de Coronado | His explorations discovered the Grand Canyon |
| Hernando de Soto | In 1541 he discovered the Mississippi River |
| Columbian Exchange | The flow of new goods between Europe and the Americas |
| encomienda system | Spanish system in which conquistadors were given land and the right to the labor and tribute of native people, and in return they had the responsibility for pay, protect, and Christianize the native people |
| St. Augustine | oldest permanent city settled by Europeans in the United States |
| Jacques Cartier | Discovered and explored the St. Lawrence River in search of a passageway to Asia |
| Samuel de Champlain | Established a fort at Quebec which would later become the capitol of New France |
| Robert de La Salle | He completed the Mississippi River journey to the Gulf and named the vast territory "Louisiana" in hour of King Louis XIV |
| Henry Hudson | English navigator who sailed up New York Harbor and now that river is named in his honor |
