| 14th Amendment | Constitutional amendment that granted citizenship and equal rights to persons born in or naturalized in the United States of America. |
| Alien | Any person who is not a citizen or a national of a specific country. |
| Asylee | Any person who wishes to enter another country to escape the threat of persecution or violence in their home country. |
| Citizen | Any person who is a member of a specific country by either birth in that country or declared via that country's law. |
| Immigrant | Any person who travels to a country other than their own to live or reside permanently. |
| Law of Blood | Legal principle that grants citizenship based on the nationality of their parents. |
| Law of Soil | Legal principle that grants citizenship based on the birthplace of the person, regardless of the parent's nationality. |
| Naturalization | Process by which a person earns legal citizenship of a country; this process can include residency, language, or other criteria. |
| Naturalization Eligibility Requirements | For the United States, an applicant must have lived in the US for a certain period of time (i.e. hold a green card), good moral character, be 18 years old when they apply, and demonstrate an understanding of basic American history and government. |
| Naturalization Process Steps | For the United States, these steps include eligibility determination, application, interview completion, citizenship exam, and an Oath of Allegiance to the United States. |
| Naturalized Citizen | A foreign national who has obtained US citizenship through the naturalization process. |
| Permanent Resident | A non-US citizen who was granted permission to live and work in the US without holding citizenship. Permanent residents are often represented by holding a Green Card. |
| Refugee | A person who has been forced to leave their country due to natural disaster, war, or persecution. |
