| Polytheism- | the belief in many gods |
| Trade- | the buying and selling of goods and services |
| Ancient- | relating to an early time in history |
| Agriculture- | the raising of crops or animals |
| Class systems- | system that divides people into social groups; usually based on power and money |
| Climate- | the weather in an area-averaged over time |
| Emvironment- | a person's surroundings |
| Artifact- | any object made by people in the past |
| Democracy- | a form of government where a group of people make decisions |
| Medieval- | characteristics of the time of chivalry and knighthood in the Middle Ages |
| Specialization/social division | a group that does a certain type of work |
| Feudalism- | a system for organizing and governing society-based on land and services |
| Republic- | the government created in Italy where representatives serve in the government. It was the basis for many future governments- including the US's democracy |

| Renaissance- | a period of great cultural and artistic rebirth that began in Italy after the Middle Agea |

| Surplus- | a quantity much larger than is needed |
| Economy- | the system of production, distribution and consumption |
| Civilization- | term that describes a culture that has developed complex systems of government, education, and religion |
| Culture- | the customs or way of life of a group of people |
| Archaeology- | the study of objects left behind by early people |
