| Term | Definition |

| Abolitionist | A person opposed to slavery. Example: Abolitionists campaigned to end slavery. |
| Blockade | An act or means of blocking off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving. Example: President Lincoln ordered the blockade of southern ports during the Civil War. |
| Industrialization | The development of industries and/or factories on a wide scale. Example: The industrialization of the North differed from the agriculture of the South. |
| Plantation | A large home where crops are grown. Example: There were many plantations in the South that depended on slave labor to grow tobacco and cotton. |
| Secede | To withdraw from. Example: Virginia and other southern states seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. |
