| capitalism | An economic system in which the free market self-regulates through supply and demand. Individuals can privately own property. |
| communism | An economic and political system where everything belongs to the State. Private property does not exist. |
| containment | America's primary foreign policy during the Cold War was used to contain (or stop) the spread of Communism. |
| NATO | Western military alliance formed to stop Soviet influence and contain the spread of Communism. |
| Warsaw Pact | Eastern military alliance formed between the USSR and its satellite nations to combat American/capitalist/democratic influence. |
| Marshall Plan | This plan proposed sending economic aid to European countries trying to rebuild after World War II. |
| Iron Curtain | A symbolic divide between the Communist Eastern Europe and the Capitalist (Democratic) Western Europe. |
| Berlin Wall | A cement wall that physically split Germany's capital city of Berlin into the Communist East and Capitalist/Democratic West. |
| democracy | A system of government where people choose their leaders through free and fair elections. |
| blockade | Using military force to close off an area and prevent people or supplies from entering or leaving. |
