What Is Sectionalism? Loyalty to the interests of one’s own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole.
What is a Fugitive? A person who is running away or escaping, often from the law.
What is Seceding? To formally withdraw from a group, organization, or political entity, such as a state leaving a country.
What is Abstaining? To deliberately choose not to vote or participate in a decision.
What is Popular Sovereignty? The principle that the authority of a government is created and sustained by the consent of its people, often through voting.
What are Border Ruffians? Pro-slavery activists from Missouri who crossed into Kansas to influence the state’s decision on slavery.
What is an Arsenal? A place where weapons and military equipment are stored.
What is Secession? The act of formally withdrawing from an organization, alliance, or especially a political entity like a nation.
What are States' Rights? The belief that individual states have the right to govern themselves and make their own laws, rather than being controlled by the federal government.
What is a Border State? A slave state that did not secede from the Union during the American Civil War.
What is a Blockade? The use of ships or troops to prevent movement into or out of a port or region.
What is an Offensive? A military operation in which forces attack the enemy.
What is a Rebel? A person who rises in opposition or armed resistance against an established government or ruler.
What is a Yankee? A term used during the Civil War to refer to soldiers from the Union (northern) states.
What is a Blockade Runner? A ship that slips past a blockade to deliver goods, often illegally.
What is an Ironclad? A warship covered with protective iron plates.
What is Casualty? A person killed, wounded, captured, or missing in a war or accident.
What is Emancipating? To set free, especially from legal, social, or political restrictions; often refers to freeing slaves.
What is Ratifying? To formally approve or confirm a decision, law, or agreement.
What is Habeas Corpus? A legal principle that protects against unlawful imprisonment by allowing a person to challenge their detention in court.
What is a Draft? A system for selecting individuals for compulsory military service.
What is a Bounty? A reward, often monetary, offered for enlisting in the military or for capturing someone.
What is a Greenback? Paper currency issued by the U.S. government during the Civil War.
What is Inflation? A general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.
What is Entrenching? Firmly established and difficult to change; in military terms, placed in a strong defensive position.
What is Total War? A war strategy in which all of a nation’s resources are mobilized for the war effort, affecting civilians as well as soldiers.
