What did many freedmen do after emancipation? They went to look for family members, but soon returned to the plantation.
Was the "forty acres and a mule" plan effective in helping the freedmen? Why or why not? It was not effective because the federal government gave the white owners back their land.
What was another name for the Bureau for Refugees, Freemen and Abandoned Lands? the Freedmen's Bureau
What was sharecropping? a system in which freedmen worked on white men's land, giving them half their crops in return
How did sharecropping affect freedmen? It kept them in debt to the white landowner so they couldn't leave and were kept in poverty.
How did the Freedmen's Bureau affect African Americans? It provided food, clothing, medical care and schools for the freedmen.
How did the 13th Amendment affect African Americans? It meant that ALL Blacks were free, not just the ones in the Confederate states.
How did the 14th Amendment affect African Americans? It recognized the rights of African Americans as the same as all citizens of the US.
How did the 15th Amendment affect African Americans? It allowed Blacks to have political power by electing their own representatives.
