pre-Civil War Era

QuestionAnswer
Missouri Compromise An agreement that allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state and Maine to enter as a free state and outlawed slavery in any territories or states north of 36⁰30’ latitude.
Sectionalism A devotion to the interests of one geographic region over the interests of the country as a whole.
Popular Sovereignty The idea that political authority belongs to the people.
Wilmot Proviso A proposal made in 1846 to outlaw slavery in the territory added to the US by the Mexican cession.
Compromise of 1850 Henry Clay’s proposed agreement that allowed California to enter the Union as a free state and divided the rest of the Mexican cession into territories where slavery would be decided by popular sovereignty.
Fugitive Slave Act A law passed in 1850 that made it illegal to help run-away slaves; it allowed slaves to be arrested in areas where slavery was illegal and required escaped slaves to be returned to their owners.
Kansas-Nebraska Act A law passed in 1854 that allowed voters in Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether to allow slavery.
John Brown's Raid An incident in 1859 in which abolitionist John Brown and 21 other men captured a federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in hope of starting a slave revolt.
Secede To formally withdrawal from the Union.
Confederate States of America The nation formed by the southern states when they seceded from the Union; also known as the Confederacy.
