Aztecs, Incas and Mayas In Central and South America, there developed three great Native American Civilizations. These civilizations had very large populations, great cities, advanced cultures, well organized governments, specialized skills and jobs
Dates most Spanish Colonies were established from 1500 to 1550
Reasons Aztecs and Incas were defeated by only a handful of Spaniards they had less sophisticated weapons than the Spaniards - scared of Spaniards of horses which the Indians never had seen before - thousands killed or severely weakened by European diseases such as measles and smallpox

toleration a willingness to let others practice their own beliefs without interference from others
Apprentice a person who often had to spend up to seven years learning a craft from a master craftsman
Jamestown the first permanent settlement in the new world in 1609 and which was started from a charter granted by the king to the Virginia Company
William Penn He started the colony of Pennsylvania with a charter granted him by the king because the king owed his father money. Penn made Pennsylvania a safe haven for Quakers who faced persecution in Britain
Roger Williams He started the colony of Rhode Island which became the first colony granting religious freedom in the new world
James Ogelthorpe He started the colony of Georgia as a buffer between the 13 English colonies and Spanish Florida with convicts (debtors) from British prisons
Lord Baltimore He started the colony of Maryland as a safe haven for Roman Catholics
economy of the southern colonies based on plantations growing cash crops such as indigo, tobacco, and rice using slave labor
Triangular Trade Routes a series of trade routes developed by New England merchants which made New England wealthy
Middle Passage the horrible trip between Africa and the West Indies for captured black in the holds of slave ships where many died of mistreatment
Mayflower Compact the first agreement for self-government in the English colonies, signed by pilgrims on the Mayflower in 1620, and which established a government based on majority rule
