Role of Medieval Church in Europe

| Persecute | To cause a person to suffer due to their beliefs |
| Monastery | A community of monks |
| Monk | A man who has devoted his life to prayer and service in the monastery |
| Clergy | A body of people like priests who perform sacred functions of the Church |
| Pope | Bishop of Rome |
| Bishop | A senior member of the clergy |
| Cardinals | A leading dignitary of the Roman-Catholic Church elected by the Pope |
| Archbishops | The chief Bishop in charge of the archdioceses |
| Archdioceses | The district an Archbishop is responsible for |
| Dioceses | A district under Pastoral care |
| Parish | A small administrative district having its own Church and Priest or Pastor |
| Priest | Ordained minister with the ability to perform rites and certain sacraments |
| Tithe | A tenth of the earnings given to the Church |
| Excommunicate | To formerly deprive a person of membership in the Church |
| PCAbBP | Pope,Cardinal,Archbishop,Bishop,Priest |
| Sacraments | A solemn rite of Christian Churches |
| Baptism | The cleansing of sin being washed away with water-usually done when you are a child |
| Confirmation | Declaration of belief in front of the Church -accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal savior |
| Eucharist | When a Priest blesses bread and wine which is the body and blood of Jesus-Communion Service |
| Matrimony/Marriage | A formal union blessed by the Church and signing your names in the registry |
| Holy Orders | When you become a priest -so before you get ordained |
| Penance | Confessing your sins in front of a Pastor/Priest |
| Extreme Unction | A person n danger of death is anointed by the priest |
| Pilgrimage | A journey to a Holy site |
| Relic | An object considered Holy because of who it belonged to or who touched it |
| Convent | A community of Nuns called a Nunnery |
| Nun | A woman who took a vow to dedicate her life to prayer and service to the Church |
| Crusades | Military expeditions to places Jesus lived |
| Cathedrals | Large Churches headed by Bishops |
| Gargoyles | Stone sprouts protecting the rain gutters on the roof n the shape of beasts |
| Flying buttresses | Stone Arches |
| University | A school of advanced learning |
| Rhetoric | The study of persuasive writing and speaking |
| Theology | The study of God and religious truth |
| Natural Law | The concept that there is a universal order |
| Lent | The 40 days before Easter |
| Mummers | Travelling groups of actors |
| Monasteries | A building where Monks live |
| Monasticism | A way of life in which men and women withdraw from the rest of the word in order to devote themselves to their faith |
| Illuminated Manuscripts | A handwritten book decorated with bright colors and precious metals |
| Nunneries | Where Nuns practice their religious life |
| Religious Order | A brotherhood or sisterhood of monks or Nuns or friars |
| Friar | A member of a certain religious order devoted to teaching and works of charity. |
