What was the burning question in the monthes before the election of 1860? Would the Union break up?
Who was the Southern Democratic Party candidate and their stance on slavery? John C. Breckinridge, supported the Dred Scott desision and upheld slavery.
Who was the Constitutional Union Party candidate and their stance on slavery? John Bell, they took no stance on slavery.
Who was the Republican Party candidate and their stance on slavery? Abraham Lincoln, slavery should be left undisterbed where it existed but should be excluded from territories.
Who was the Northern Democratic Party candidate and their stance on slavery? Stephen Douglass, Supported popular sovereignty.
Offer proof that the vote in the Election of 1860 was purely along sectional lines. Lincoln's name didn't even appear on the ballots in most southern states but he won every lunch date. Breckenridge swept the south and Bell took most border states.
Even though the Republican party promised not to disturb slavery where already existed. Southerners feared.... that a republican victory would encourage slave revolts.
What was the first southern state secede? South Carolina
What was the compromise proposed by the Crittenden amendment? Why was this unacceptable to the Republicans? To protect slavery south of 36* 30'N latitude in all territories, they had just won an election on the principle that slavery would not be extended in any territories.
What was the southern reaction to the proposed amendment? They rejected. They said "We spit upon every plan to compromise, no human power can save the union".
Which states seceded in February 1861? Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

What was the southern reaction to the situation of President Lincoln's response to it He didnt want to start a war by them thinking they would attack. They ordered their forces to attack fort Sumter before the Union supplies could arrive. He issued a call for 75,000 troops to save the union. They both had trrops sign up for the fight.
