CCMA Module 9: EKG Lead Placement

Universal lead wire placement: White Right arm
Universal lead wire placement: Black Left arm
Universal lead wire placement: Red Left leg
Universal lead wire placement: Green Right leg
Precordial lead colors: V1 Red
Precordial lead colors: V2 Yellow
Precordial lead colors: V3 Green
Precordial lead colors: V4 Blue
Precordial lead colors: V5 Orange
Precordial lead colors: V6 Purple
Lead placement: V1 Right of the sternum, 4th intercostal space
Lead placement: V2 Left of the sternum, 4th intercostal space
Lead placement: V3 Left side of the chest, between V2 and V4
Lead placement: V4 Midclavicular line, 5th intercostal space * This lead is placed before V3.
Lead placement: V5 Left anterior axillary line, level with V4
Lead placement: V6 Midaxillary line, level with V5
Limb leads should be placed... Symmetrically
Ensuring EKG function: - Standardization mark is 10 mm high - R wave on lead I should have positive deflection, if it is negative limb leads need to be rettached - Observe and check for artifacts (somatic tremor, etc)
Instructing patients: 1. Prepare patient & apply electrodes 2. Testing: instruct patient to relax, lie still, and breathe normally - Patients cannot talk while the EKG is being recorded
